The Gargano and its caves

The visit to the caves also allows a glimpse of the wonderful beaches along the southern coast of Vieste. Many of these beaches are accessible only by sea, and during the winter these caves are almost submerged by the waters. In Vieste, there are numerous organizations offering guided tours of the caves.

The Wonders of Gargano

The Gargano coast is one of the most picturesque landscapes of Puglia, with tall white cliffs overlooking the sea, mostly accessible only by boat, where pines and broom bushes stretch over the azure waters. Small coves open between the rocks, little green oases along the steep mountain sides, interrupted here and there by stretches of pebble beaches. The coast between Vieste and Mattinata is rich in vast cavities and stunning natural scenery, with coves, white beaches, and small inlets, home to yellow-legged gulls and kestrels.
Century after century, millennium after millennium, with methodical slowness, the waves of the sea have eroded the limestone coast of Gargano, shaping natural landscapes, creating gaps, fissures, and tunnels. There are about twenty sea caves that can be explored, but around ten of them inspire the greatest wonder, the same ones featured on tourist postcards in every shop in Vieste. The names of the caves come from the unique characteristics of each, just as they captured the attention of their discoverers, who continue to pass them down: Grotta Campana Grande, Grotta dei Contrabbandieri, Grotta delle Rondini… During the summer season, tourist organizations allow visitors to explore them by large boats. The tours take place in the morning or in the afternoon. The morning visit is ideal, as it allows you to fully appreciate their splendor thanks to the sunlight, which at this time of day illuminates the interior of the caves with thousands of shades of color.
