Pizzomunno and its legend

The Village Beach

The Pizzomunno is a monolith about 25 meters high, located at the beginning of the beach called Spiaggia del Castello. It rises along the coastal road that from Vieste leads to Pugnochiuso, running south along the Gargano promontory. The legend of Pizzomunno is beautiful and fairy-tale-like. Pizzomunno was a fisherman who loved the beautiful Cristalda and went out alone to the open sea every day with his boat, while the Sirens awaited him offshore, singing their sweet and deadly enchanting songs. One day, the Sirens, captivated by the young man’s beauty, offered him immortality and the chance to become their king. But Pizzomunno loved Cristalda too much and refused. Offended, the Sirens kidnapped the young woman and dragged her into the abysses of the sea. The following day, the fishermen found Pizzomunno petrified with grief on a white rock, which has borne his name ever since. The legend says that every hundred years, for a single night, the beautiful Cristalda can resurface from the depths and reunite with her beloved Pizzomunno, keeping their great love alive.
